XP-Dev.com Website (Re)Design
Table of contents
Design Decisions
The new site design has to be:
Intuitive
User should think less
Brief and concise
Less reading
Sectioning/Compartmentalisation
Clear sectioning of:
- Information
Split information to different types. It needs to be clear that each section of information has standalone content. - Actions
Give users a separate area for things they can do (i.e. not littered everywhere) - Navigation
Need to answer the following questions- Where am I ?
- Where can I go ?
- What can I do ?
Consistency
Look and feel has to be consistent. Need to put all common repetitive tasks at the same place.
Need to have the design consistent – at the moment when user logs in, it gives a different look and feel, which is wrong.
Implementation
Full 100% width, 2 column layout
Top banner
There will be a logo on the top left with navigation tabs running along beside it.
Tabs will be highlighted for the page/section that a user is in.
Crumbs
Each page will have crumbs on the top to highlight location
Two Column Layout
The two columns will have a ratio of 65% : 35% with the larger one on the left.
Left Column
This will be the main content area
Right Column
This will be the users action and navigation box
The first navigation box should always be the “actions list” that apply to the current page. For e.g. if it is a Wiki page, then it should have Edit and Delete links (if it can be read).
It will include areas which link to the users Projects, Repositories, Friends, Todos, Timeline etc.
Below that will be links to XPDev’s own Forum, Public Wiki etc.
Ideas for Content
Home Page
It should have 2 big headers saying Free 1.5GB Subversion Hosting and Free Integrated Project Collaboration
Then it should have a Get Started in 3 steps:
- Register
- Create a repository or a project
- There’s no step 3! LOL
And a link to a full list of Features
Features Page
Simple 2 headings: Subversion Hosting and Project Tracking and list the features
